Paul McLean Mimaki Prints Video Installation
February 15 - March 31, 2008Opening Reception February 15 7-9 p.m.
"Elemental," an exhibition of 8 new color field paintings in acrylic by nationally exhibiting artist, and Marfa resident, Steve Holzer, will inaugurate a new season of exhibitions and launch the Grand Re-Opening of Tillie Arts of Marfa. "Elemental," Holzer's first solo exhibition in Marfa, will be on view at Tillie Arts from February 15 through March 31, 2008 with a public opening reception for the artist on February 15th from 7-9 p.m.
Holzer's contemplative works, created over the recent winter months, give us a glimpse into the artist's exploration of color as subject. These works describe the sublime nature of light and color through pigment and the artist's vocabulary of elemental shapes. Holzer states: "I formulate the paint from raw materials. I choose colors that activate the ambient light when it hits the surface of the painting. My objective is to present the opportunity for light and pigment to become interactive."
Steve Holzer (b. 1950, USA) has exhibited extensively in galleries around the country, and was included in a group show at the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain. His work can be found in many private and public collections, including the permanent collection of the Detroit Institute of the Arts.
In the Tillie Arts Project Space, California-based artist Paul McLean will present works from his "Pattern Series," including several Mimaki prints and a video installation. McLean, inspired by color field painters, minimalist sculptors, and Native American weaving traditions, uses the digital medium to construct patterns of color, pixel by pixel.
Paul McLean obtained his MFA from Claremont Graduate University. He has shown his work extensively in galleries across the US, and has work in the permanent collection of the Morris Graves Foundation.
Tillie Arts of Marfa opened last summer and has hosted a number of visiting artists and social events, providing a showcase for a very diverse group. The gallery's owner, Jenni Urbanczyk, is re-envisioning the direction of the gallery and has a very exciting year of exhibitions scheduled of both regional and national artists. "The first year brought exciting work and gave me the opportunity to try a variety of things," says Urbanczyk, "This year I have a more focused idea for the gallery's direction, and a fantastic group of emerging and mid-career artists bringing their work to Marfa."
